Ergoflex Google Ads Case Study

Turning an underperforming paid search account into a stronger ecommerce revenue channel through better targeting, campaign structure, ad testing, and landing-page strategy.

Ergoflex Australia is a memory foam mattress company operating without a traditional showroom. Because customers couldn’t walk into a store and try the product, the company relied heavily on reviews, word of mouth, and digital marketing to reach potential buyers.

When Ergoflex came to me, they were already running Google AdWords, now Google Ads, but the account needed significant improvement.

The goal wasn’t simply to generate more clicks.

It was to generate more sales.

The Client

Selling Mattresses Without a Traditional Showroom

Ergoflex Australia sells memory foam mattresses directly to consumers without a physical showroom.

That business model creates an interesting marketing challenge.

Customers are considering a significant purchase without first experiencing the product in person.

Reviews, word of mouth, strong product positioning, and a well-designed digital customer journey therefore become especially important.

Paid search offered Ergoflex an opportunity to reach people actively researching mattresses and related products.

But simply having a Google Ads account wasn’t enough.

The Challenge

Google Ads Was Running, But It Needed a Better Strategy

Ergoflex already had an active Google AdWords account when I became involved.

The problem wasn’t a lack of advertising.

The existing advertising needed to perform better.

Rather than immediately increasing spend or launching more ads, I started by examining how the existing account was structured and how effectively it was turning advertising dollars into sales.

What I Found

The Account Needed an Overhaul

I began with a comprehensive audit of the existing advertising account.

Several areas needed attention.

Keyword Targeting

The existing keyword strategy needed to be reevaluated.

We conducted new keyword research to determine which existing terms were worth keeping, which should be removed, and where additional opportunities existed.

Ad Performance

Existing ad copy was reviewed alongside important performance indicators, including click-through rate and cost per conversion.

Campaign Structure

The account needed greater segmentation so we could target different audiences and search behaviors more effectively.

Conversion Paths

Getting the click was only part of the process.

Where users landed after clicking an ad also needed attention.

The objective was to create a tighter relationship between what someone searched → what the ad promised → where the visitor landed → what we wanted them to do next.

The Strategy

Improve the Entire Paid Search Journey

The strategy wasn’t based on finding one magical keyword or writing one perfect ad.

We needed to improve multiple parts of the advertising system simultaneously.

That meant:

Better targeting to reach more relevant potential customers.

Negative keywords to reduce irrelevant searches and wasted advertising spend.

Stronger campaign segmentation to give us more control over targeting and optimization.

Continuous ad testing to identify messaging that generated stronger responses.

Better landing-page alignment so visitors arrived on pages relevant to what they had searched for.

Expanded product visibility through Google Shopping.

And promotional messaging that gave potential buyers compelling reasons to act.

What We Changed

Rebuilt the Keyword Strategy

After completing new keyword research, we added relevant new keywords while introducing negative keywords to prevent ads from appearing for searches that weren’t a good fit.

This gave us greater control over who the campaigns were reaching.

Created Five Strategic Campaigns

We reorganized the advertising strategy into five campaigns designed to improve targeting and optimization:

Brand

Focused on searches directly related to the Ergoflex brand.

Content Network

Expanded visibility beyond traditional search advertising.

Targeted Content Network

Created additional control over where and how display advertising appeared.

Competitor Campaign

Targeted relevant competitive search opportunities.

Product Listing

Expanded Ergoflex’s product visibility through what was then Google’s Product Listing advertising and Google Shopping.

A note on terminology: This project took place during the Google AdWords era. Google’s advertising products and campaign types have changed considerably since then, but the underlying strategic principles, targeting, segmentation, testing and conversion optimization, remain just as important today.

Continuous Ad Testing

Don't Assume. Test.

Rather than choosing ad copy once and leaving it alone, we continually A/B tested messaging across campaigns.

That allowed us to evaluate what actually resonated with potential buyers and make improvements based on performance rather than assumptions.

This principle remains a major part of how I approach Google Ads today:

Launch. Measure. Learn. Improve.

Landing Page Optimization

The Click Isn't the Conversion

An advertising campaign can target the right person and deliver a great ad, and still lose the sale if the landing experience doesn’t match the customer’s expectations.

We adjusted landing-page URLs so users were directed to more specific pages that better aligned with their search and the intended conversion.

That reduced friction between the advertisement and the next step in the buying process.

Promotional Strategy

Give Buyers a Reason to Act

Where appropriate, promotions and compelling offers were incorporated directly into advertising messages.

These included offers such as:

Free Shipping

and

50% Off Sales

when those promotions were available.

That allowed the ads to communicate not only what Ergoflex sold, but also why someone might choose to purchase now.

The Results

$600,000 in Additional Annual Revenue

The ultimate measure of advertising performance isn’t impressions.

It isn’t clicks.

It isn’t even click-through rate.

It’s what the advertising contributes to the business.

Following the restructuring, targeting improvements, campaign expansion, continuous testing, and landing-page optimization, the original Ergoflex case study documented an increase in annual revenue of:

+$600,000 Per Year

That’s the result that matters.

Why This Strategy Worked

Google Ads Is a System, Not a Collection of Ads

It’s tempting to look at paid search as:

Keyword → Ad → Click

But successful advertising requires more than that.

The keyword determines intent.

The campaign structure determines control.

Negative keywords reduce wasted exposure.

The ad determines whether someone clicks.

The offer influences urgency.

The landing page influences whether that visitor continues.

Conversion data tells us what should happen next.

When those elements work together, Google Ads becomes more than a traffic source.

It becomes a measurable business-growth channel.

Google Ads Has Changed.
The Strategy Behind Performance Hasn't.

This case study comes from an earlier generation of Google’s advertising platform, when Google Ads was still called Google AdWords.

Campaign types, automation, bidding strategies, audience targeting, and measurement have evolved dramatically since then.

Today we have Search, Performance Max, Demand Gen, Shopping, remarketing, automated bidding, and increasingly sophisticated conversion signals.

But technology doesn’t replace strategy.

Successful Google Ads management still requires understanding:

Who are we trying to reach?

What are they looking for?

What should we say to them?

Where should we send them?

What constitutes a valuable conversion?

And is the advertising actually producing a return?

Those are the questions I continue to build Google Ads strategies around today.
